For the start of the 2019-2020 school year, School District 21 has expanded it’s 1:1 Chromebook learning program down to include all grades K-8, which means all students will have a dedicated device to utilize and enhance their modern 21st century learning experience. In addition, for the last several years, students in grades 6-8 have taken their devices home each night, whereas all lower grades K-5 had devices that stayed in school in storage carts and cabinets. Also new for the 2019-2020 school year is the expansion of our Chromebook take home model to include students in grades 3-5. The expansion of this take home model has proven to be beneficial to student learning, and allows for learning with these tools to continue beyond the normal school day.
- All Students K – 8th Grades will be using the HP x360 11 Chromebook.
- Students in grades 3rd-8th grade will be taking devices home and utilizing Bump Armor always on Chromebook cases.
School District 21 has developed many forms of communication and information to help support students and parents in this 1:1 Chromebook learning initiative. For parents of students in grades 3-5 a parent letter was mailed out in the August school mailing to provide a deeper introduction for parents on the initiative. This letter can be found below in English, Spanish, Polish, and Russian.
In addition to the parent letter above, School District 21 has also developed a comprehensive Parent/Student Handbook. The purpose of this handbook is to serve as an informative and useful guide for parents and students to support the success of students in their 21st century learning experience here at CCSD21. This handbook should be the central point of reference for all things related to our 1:1 Chromebook learning program. This handbook was developed and originally intended for 3rd – 5th grade parents and students, but applies to all grade levels K-8. The handbook can be found below in English, Spanish, Polish, and Russian.

Finally, School District 21 has developed a student care presentation for students in grades 3-5 to prepare them for taking their device home. All students within these grade levels will have these slides presented to them by their classroom teacher during deployment of these Chromebooks. This presentation is also a great reference for all parents. The student care presentation can be found below in English, Spanish, Polish, and Russian.

In addition to being the device that best supports the District’s efforts toward the PLC Areas of Focus, this device also proves to be the easiest to manage and least expensive of all of the devices considered. This combination will allow for even more of these devices to be in the hands of students, while exercising fiscal responsibility.
Chromebooks are simply tools for learning, but they are powerful tools that allow students to reach out and learn from a much wider range of resources than traditional books and magazines. With the web, students can stay up-to-date on changes in information and the world as well as benefit from learning about content and concepts through a variety of perspectives. School District 21 remains excited about the potential of these tools to deepen learning for all students and to make the curriculum more relevant for students than ever.
