Community Consolidated School District 21 gratefully received a $623,000 gift at its February Board of Education meeting from the trust of Mary Ann Sanford. Sanford, who passed away in 2017, was a teacher in School District 21 for 28 years prior to her retirement in 1989.

“We are incredibly grateful for the generosity of Ms. Sanford and are so thankful to be able to honor her legacy by providing engaging and enriching educational opportunities to the children of CCSD21.” said Dr. Michael Connolly, Superintendent of CCSD21.

Sanford was a third grade teacher and worked at Twain and Sandburg Elementary Schools in the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s. She was passionate about science, particularly space and the solar system, and ran a Young Astronauts Club for students at school.

Her financial gift to School District 21 will support extracurricular opportunities for third, fourth, and fifth grade students for decades to come. CCSD21 is eligible to access about $25,000 of the gift annually. The trust is administered by the Lake County Community Foundation.
