2018 Summer Professional Development

Throughout the school year, staff members across School District 21 take responsibility for their own ongoing learning through both structured and unstructured learning opportunities. Each summer, there are a variety of formal professional development opportunities available to CCSD21 staff members.

Teaching Reading in Small Groups

Target audience: K-8 instructional staff who support literacy.

Description: This session is focused on how to effectively incorporate small group instruction into the literacy block. Attendance is voluntary and attendees will be paid.

Objectives:

  • Become well-versed in assessment lenses and tools
  • Target instruction for each student’s needs and form groups accordingly
  • Understand small-group structures to support engagement, fluency, comprehension, print work, and conversation skills
  • Practice scheduling techniques to ensure ongoing assessment

Middle School Reading Workshop – Year 2

Target audience: Grade 6-8 instructional staff who support literacy.

Description: This session is focused on developing a reading workshop model within the communications classroom: creating a set workshop structure, aligning reading and writing power standards, and writing mini-lessons for reading power standards. Attendance is voluntary and attendees will be paid.

Literacy Instruction Utilizing the “Writing Units of Study” Resource

Target audience: PK-8 instructional staff who support literacy.

Description: Learn more about the Lucy Calkins’ Writing Units of Study program. Participants will learn how to utilize the Writing Units of Study to effectively implement our CCSD21 Language Arts Frameworks and how the resource supports a cohesive PK-8 sequence for teaching and assessing the writing power standards. Attendance is voluntary and attendees will be paid.

DRA2 / EDL2

Target audience: Instructional staff who will be administering this assessment for the first time in 2018-2019, or who would like to learn more about how to use the tool to guide instruction.

Description: Join us to learn how to accurately administer and score the DRA2/EDL2 (Developmental Reading Assessment®/ Evaluación del desarrollo de la lectura®). Learn strategies for organizing the assessment and utilizing other resources to support instruction based on assessment results. Attendance is voluntary and attendees will be paid.

The Balancing Act of Kindergarten Writing

Target audience: Kindergarten staff.

Description: Kindergarten teachers from across the district will collaborate to develop a set of mini-lessons for the 1st month of kindergarten that will foster oral language development and assist children in becoming successful at storytelling by composing with pictures before they begin the writing units of study. Attendance is voluntary and attendees will be paid.

Effective Instruction for Blended Classrooms

Target audience: Teachers who will be teaching a blended classroom in the 2018-2019 school year.

Description: Teachers will review the aspects of a successful blended learning environment. Blended power standards and frameworks will be shared and discussed. Participants will begin planning for the upcoming school year. Teachers new to blended classrooms or returning to blended classrooms are encouraged to attend. Attendance is voluntary and attendees will be paid.

ISU PDS Cooperating Teacher Orientation

Target audience: Cooperating teachers.

Description: Cooperating Teachers (CTs) will learn about the requirements of the Illinois State University Professional Development School (ISU-PDS) program. Participants will learn to enhance their skills in coaching and mentoring student teaching interns.

New Staff Orientation

Target audience: Staff new to CCSD21.

Description: Session 1 – New staff will be introduced to the Professional Learning Community of School District 21, and will take a bus tour of the district. In the afternoon, staff will return to their schools for building-based meetings with their principal.

Session 2 – New staff will learn about the mentoring program and employee expectations. Staff will return to schools for the afternoon.

Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Recertification

Target audience: Staff members who are already certified in NCI and need recertification.

Description: This recertification is for staff that are certified in NCI (Non-Violent Crisis Intervention) and who need a recertification to stay current with their practice. Attendance is voluntary and attendees will be paid.

Description: Teachers will work with other blended staff to create a blended sequence with “The Writing Units of Study” for each band of grade levels (K-1, 2-3, 4-5). Attendance is voluntary and attendees will be paid.

Description: Join us for an exciting, fun-filled day of technology learning presented by CCSD21 teachers and staff. Experience a conference-style setting and choose your sessions based on personal interest and technology learning goals. Learn new skills, or dive deeper into resources and strategies you’d like to know more about. This Mini-Con will be hands-on, with time allotted to work and create in a supported environment. Attendance is voluntary and attendees will not be paid.

More Information

Description: After signing a contract, all new certified staff members will participate in a technology training. During this time, staff members will receive a staff laptop and associated accessories, participate in basic training about their staff laptop and how it functions, learn about District policies related to the staff laptop, receive a CCSD21 Google Apps for Education account and email address, and more.
