Middle school students learn first-hand about solar power

Solar panels are being installed at all three middle schools in CCSD21 as a way for students to learn about renewable energy. Each school will have three panels affixed on the exterior south wall or roof of their building. While the panels will provide some energy to power lights and other items, the main purpose of the panels is educational. “Our students will monitor the energy production throughout the school year to determine how much power is being generated and used in various seasons,” said Anastasia Netzel, principal at London Middle School. Additionally, students will learn about solar power and renewable energy in their classrooms. The panels, installed by Earth Wind & Solar Energy, are being funded by a grant from The Illinois Clean Energy Community Foundation under the K-12 Solar Schools Program.
