McKinney Vento: Families in Temporary Living Situations

Have you and your children lost housing?

Children that …

  • Share housing with another family because of lost housing or economic hardship
  • Live in a shelter or motel
  • Live in a campground, car, old building, or other temporary shelter
  • Are migratory, but accommodations are not fit for habitation
  • Left home and live in inadequate accommodations
  • Are not permitted by their parents/guardians to live at home
  • Don’t have a permanent address

Have the right to …

  • Attend their old school or the school closest to where they are now living
  • Enroll in school immediately with or without school or medical records and receive assistance to obtain such records in a reasonable timeframe
  • Receive assistance from the district liaison with immunizations and/or medical records
  • Receive transportation to and from school
  • Receive priority consideration to preschool programs
  • Receive free breakfast and lunch
  • Receive fee waivers
  • Supplemental tutoring, if needed

Niños(as) que…

  • Comparten una vivienda con otra familia o algún pariente a causa de no poder encontrar alojamiento o por falta de recursos económicos
  • Viven en un albergue, refugio u hotel
  • Estén alojándose en un parque de campamento, en un carro, edificio abandonado o en un refugio temporal
  • Son migratorios, pero los alojamientos no son aptos para ser habitados
  • Abandonaron su hogar y viven en alojamientos inadecuados
  • Sus padres/tutores no les permiten vivir en casa
  • No tienen un domicilio permanente

Tienen el derecho a…

  • Asistir a la escuela en la que asistian antes de quedarse sin hogar o asistir a la escuela más cercana a su domicilio actual
  • Inscribirse inmediatamente en la escuela con o sin archivos médicos o escolares y recibir asistencia para obtener dichos registros en un plazo razonable
  • Recibir ayuda para obtener archivos médicos o de vacunas por medio de un representante del distrito escolar
  • Recibir transporte escolar a la escuela y a los programas escolares
  • Recibir consideración prioritaria para los programas preescolares
  • Recibir desayuno y almuerzo gratis
  • Recibir exenciones de tarifas
  • Tutoría suplementaria, si es necesario
