At its April 24 meeting, the Community Consolidated School District 21 Board of Education unanimously approved the appointments of a new executive director of human resources and a new director of student services.

Lewis Roberts will become the new executive director of human resources, effective July 1. He succeeds Bob Gurney, who is set to become the new superintendent of Mokena School District 159. Roberts joins the district from East Maine School District 63, where he most recently served as principal of Gemini Middle School.

He also earned a certificate in human resource management from Cornell University, and was a Merit Award recipient from the Florida Department of Education in 2009-2010 and was named Passport Charter School Teacher of the Year in 2010-2011.

District administrators credited Roberts for his experience in leading strategic workforce planning, negotiating complex labor agreements, and implementing risk management strategies.

I’m thrilled to join District 21 and look forward to putting my experience to work and building on the systems already in place,” Roberts said. “This is a district that successfully balances celebrating its strengths with thoughtful reflection for growth, and I’m excited to be a part of that.”

Sherri Massa will become the new director of student services, also effective July 1. She joins the district from West Chicago School District 33, where she has served as an assistant principal, principal, and most recently as its director of student services. In that role, she has been responsible for the creation of a special education guidebook and student success team chair manual, and improving processes to achieve performance objectives, among other duties.

“I am excited to bring those experiences to CCSD21 in order to support our students and staff,” Massa said. “I am looking forward to getting to know the families in our communities and working alongside teachers, staff and administrators to best equip our students to be successful learners.”
